Tabby debt collection UAE - what to do if they contact you

A practical guide to handling Tabby BNPL collection in the UAE — your rights, their process, and how to resolve missed payments.

If Tabby or a collection partner contacts you about missed BNPL payments in the UAE, don't panic. Tabby collection is less aggressive than bank debt recovery, and you have options. Here's a complete guide to handling it.

How Tabby collection works

Tabby is a "Buy Now Pay Later" (BNPL) service that lets you split purchases into 4 interest-free payments. If you miss a payment, here's what typically happens:

Week 1-2: Automated reminders

You'll receive SMS messages, push notifications, and emails reminding you about the missed payment. At this stage:

  • No late fees yet (Tabby has recently removed late fees in compliance with UAE regulations)
  • Your Tabby account is frozen (you can't make new purchases)
  • No AECB impact yet

Week 3-4: Increased contact

If you don't respond, Tabby increases communication frequency. You may receive:

  • More frequent SMS and email
  • Phone calls from Tabby customer service
  • Warnings about potential account closure

Month 2+: Collection escalation

After extended non-payment:

  • Your account is closed permanently
  • Tabby may report to AECB (though BNPL reporting to AECB is still inconsistent)
  • They may assign your debt to a third-party collection agency

Rare: Legal action

Unlike banks, BNPL providers rarely pursue legal action for individual debts because:

  • Average debt amounts are small (typically AED 500-5000)
  • Legal costs exceed recovery value
  • BNPL business model relies on volume, not enforcement

This doesn't mean you should ignore the debt — just that a travel ban or court case is very unlikely for Tabby debt alone.

Your rights when dealing with Tabby collection

1. Right to verification

You can ask Tabby to verify:

  • The exact amount owed
  • A breakdown of purchases
  • Any fees or charges applied
  • The payment due dates

Request this in writing through the Tabby app or via email.

2. Right to communication records

Keep records of all contact with Tabby:

  • Screenshot SMS messages
  • Save emails
  • Note dates and times of calls
  • Record names of people you speak to

3. Right to reasonable contact

Tabby and any collection agency must:

  • Contact you at reasonable hours
  • Not use threatening language
  • Not discuss your debt with third parties (like your employer)
  • Not misrepresent legal consequences

If you experience harassment, document it and file a complaint with UAE Consumer Protection.

How to respond to Tabby collection

Step 1: Verify the debt

Before paying anything, confirm:

  • The total amount (breakdown of principal + any fees)
  • Which purchases the debt relates to
  • The current status of your Tabby account

You can check this in the Tabby app or by emailing support@tabby.ai.

Step 2: Assess your situation

Can you pay now? Great — pay through the app.

Can you pay part of it? Consider offering a partial payment as good faith while you work out the rest.

Can't pay at all right now? Read the next section on negotiating.

Step 3: Communicate proactively

If you can't pay immediately, contact Tabby before they escalate:

Email template:

Subject: Payment Arrangement Request — [Your Tabby Account Email]

Hi Tabby Support,

I have outstanding payments totalling [AMOUNT] on my account.

Due to [brief explanation — e.g., "temporary cash flow issues"], I'm currently unable to pay the full amount but want to resolve this.

I can offer:

  • Option A: Pay [AMOUNT] now and the remainder by [DATE]
  • Option B: Pay [AMOUNT/MONTH] over the next [X] months

Please let me know what arrangements are possible.

Best regards, [Name] [Phone]

Step 4: Get agreements in writing

If Tabby agrees to a payment plan, get confirmation in writing (email is fine) that includes:

  • The agreed payment amounts and dates
  • What happens if you complete the plan (account status, AECB reporting)
  • Confirmation that no further fees will be added

What about third-party collection agencies?

If your debt is assigned to a collection agency (like First Gulf or Abu Dhabi collection agencies), the same principles apply:

  1. Verify the debt — ask for proof they own or are authorised to collect it
  2. Communicate in writing — email creates a paper trail
  3. Know your rights — they can't harass you or misrepresent legal consequences
  4. Negotiate — collection agencies often accept significantly less than the full amount because they bought the debt at a discount

Does Tabby debt affect AECB?

Currently, BNPL reporting to AECB is inconsistent. Unlike banks, BNPL providers don't have standardised credit reporting agreements in UAE.

However:

  • Tabby has stated they will report defaults to AECB
  • AECB is expanding to include more data sources
  • Even if not reported now, practices may change

The safest assumption is that unpaid Tabby debt could affect your credit, especially for larger amounts.

Tabby vs bank debt: Key differences

| Factor | Tabby | Bank | |--------|-------|------| | Legal action risk | Very low | Medium to high | | AECB reporting | Inconsistent | Automatic | | Late fees | Removed | Yes | | Collection intensity | Moderate | Aggressive | | Travel ban risk | Negligible | Possible (with court order) |

Frequently asked questions

Will Tabby take me to court over unpaid debt?

Very unlikely for typical BNPL amounts. Legal action costs more than most Tabby debts. However, don't assume this means you can ignore it — your credit may be affected and collection contact can be stressful.

Can I still use Tabby after settling a debt?

Not usually for the same account. You may be able to create a new account after some time, but Tabby reserves the right to deny service to previous defaulters.

Does Tabby charge late fees?

Tabby removed late fees in 2024 to comply with UAE Central Bank BNPL regulations. You shouldn't be charged late fees on new purchases, though older debts might have fees applied.

Will Tabby contact my employer?

No. Legitimate collection processes don't involve contacting your employer. If someone claiming to be from Tabby contacts your workplace, this may be harassment or a scam — report it.

Can I negotiate a lower settlement with Tabby?

Sometimes. If your debt has been with collections for a while, Tabby (or the collection agency) may accept less than the full amount to close the case. Start by offering 50-70% and see how they respond.

What if I dispute the purchases?

If you believe charges are fraudulent or for items you returned, dispute them through the Tabby app or email. Provide evidence (return confirmation, fraud report) and ask for investigation.
