Tabby card blocked — why it happens and how to unblock it

Tabby declined me at the till and the app just says my balance is locked.

Why a Tabby card or balance gets blocked in the UAE — an overdue instalment, an expired Emirates ID, a cut limit — and the one step that unblocks each.

to unblock a Tabby card after you upload a renewed Emirates ID

A Tabby card or balance is blocked for one of three reasons the app will show you — your first order is unpaid, your limit is too small for the purchase, or an instalment is overdue — plus one it may not: an expired Emirates ID on file. Each has one fix, none of them is a legal matter, and the overdue one is the only one that gets more expensive the longer you leave it.

The three reasons Tabby gives, and the fix for each

Tabby's own help page lists why a balance is locked. Read the message in the app before doing anything, because the fix is different for each.

Your first Tabby purchase has not been paid yet

A new account is on probation. Tabby says the credit limit unlocks once you pay for your first order, so there is nothing to unblock: pay the first plan as it falls due and the balance opens on its own.

Your limit is not enough for the purchase

This is the one people mistake for a block. The card works; the basket is bigger than the limit Tabby has given you. Make a smaller purchase, or pay the difference to the shop directly. Limits grow with repayment history and, Tabby says, with verified income.

You have overdue payments

You cannot shop until the overdue instalment is paid. This is the block that costs money while it stands: Tabby's Key Facts Statement sets a collection charge on a missed Pay Later instalment at 15 percent of the instalment, capped between AED 40 and AED 70, taken on the day it is missed and again on days 15 and 29 if it is still unpaid. The numbers are in the late fees guide. Pay the overdue amount and the block lifts.

The fourth reason: your Emirates ID has expired

Tabby's cardholder agreement is explicit. If the ID used for your identity check has expired, "your card will be blocked from any further usage", and it is unblocked within 2 to 3 business days after you upload the renewed one. No payment was missed; the block is a compliance step. Check the expiry date in your profile before you assume the worst.

When Tabby, not you, pulled the limit

Two clauses in the agreement explain a block with nothing overdue and a valid ID:

  • Tabby may reduce or cancel your available limit, including automatically, if in its assessment your creditworthiness has deteriorated or it receives notice that it has. In practice that is an Al Etihad Credit Bureau signal: a new default elsewhere, a bounced cheque, a sharp rise in borrowing.
  • Tabby or its card partner, Emirates NBD, can suspend the card with immediate effect until a breach of the agreement is remedied. The agreement says you will be told in advance unless there are security reasons not to.

If this is you, ask in writing which clause they are relying on. The in-app chat creates a record; the call centre is 800 82229. A limit cut because of your credit file is fixed by the file, not by Tabby: pull your AECB report and see what changed.

Will the block show on your credit file?

The block itself is not a credit event. The overdue balance behind it is. From July 2026 Tabby and Tamara accounts appear on Al Etihad Credit Bureau reports, and Tabby's help centre says consistently late payments negatively affect a customer's score and their eligibility for loans elsewhere. Tabby also says it only approves Pay Later loans for people in good standing with the bureau, which is why a blocked account can become a refused one. What a lender makes of a BNPL line is in the BNPL-on-your-report guide.

What not to do while the card is dark

  • Do not open a Tamara or Postpay plan to clear the Tabby one. Four small plans read as four open credit lines on your file, and the second company sees the first.
  • Do not pay a collector anything before Tabby's own app shows the overdue figure. The collections guide covers how to verify a balance and what a collector may and may not say.
  • Do not link a credit card as the repayment method to get through the month. Tabby may charge a processing fee of up to 1 percent on card repayments, and you have moved a 0 percent plan onto a 3-percent-a-month card.

Frequently asked questions

Does a blocked Tabby card mean a court case?

No. A block is a product setting in Tabby's system. A court case over a Tabby balance alone is rare, because the amounts do not justify the costs; the realistic consequence of a long overdue is the credit file, not a judge. The timeline guide shows how far a bank loan goes by comparison.

My ID is valid and nothing is overdue. Why is the card still blocked?

Either Tabby cut the limit on a creditworthiness signal, or the card was suspended by Tabby or Emirates NBD under the agreement. Both should come with notice. Ask in the chat for the reason and the clause, and pull your AECB report to see whether something new appears on it.

Can I still pay instalments while the card is blocked?

Yes. Repayments are taken from your linked payment method on the due dates whether or not you can shop, and paying is what lifts an overdue block. Make sure the linked card has funds, because Tabby says it may try the linked card more than once after a due date.

How long does an overdue block last after I pay?

The help centre ties the block to the overdue amount, so it lifts when the payment clears. The collection charge already taken is not refunded; Tabby's Key Facts Statement calls it non-refundable.

Will Tabby give me a travel ban?

A travel ban is a court order generally for a debt of AED 10,000 or more under the 2022 Civil Procedures Law, and only a court issues one. Tabby cannot. The travel ban guide explains how one is issued and lifted.
