30 days
the ILOE claim window, and the one deadline that does not come back
Lost your job in the UAE — your loans, gratuity, ILOE and visa
They told me on a Tuesday and my loan payment is due on the 25th.
The first week after losing a job in the UAE: the visa grace period, the ILOE claim, your gratuity, and what to tell the bank before the settlement lands.
- 30 days
- to submit an ILOE claim from the day the job ended
- 60%
- of basic salary, for up to three months per claim
- 21 / 30 days
- of basic pay a year of gratuity, before and after five years' service
The sequence, at a glance
Day 1–2
Get the cancellation paperwork and the final-settlement figure in writing from HR.
Within 30 days
Submit the ILOE claim. This window closes and does not reopen.
Before the settlement is paid
Email the bank: employment ended, here is what I can pay, please confirm the options in writing.
The grace period
Commonly 60 days from cancellation to find work or leave, though it varies by visa type.
Next due date
Pay what you can, even partially, and keep every reply in one folder.
Losing a job in the UAE starts four clocks on the same day: the visa grace period, the ILOE claim window, the final settlement, and your loan's next due date. Only one of them belongs to the bank, and it is the one most people deal with first. The order that protects you is the opposite: claim the insurance, get the settlement figure, then write to the bank before the money moves.
The four clocks, and which one closes for good
| Clock | Runs for | What happens if you miss it |
|---|---|---|
| ILOE claim | 30 days from the day the job ended | The claim is gone. This is the only one that does not come back. |
| Final settlement | Days to weeks, at HR's pace | The money lands wherever your salary landed, and the conversation with the bank gets harder |
| Visa grace period | Commonly 60 days from cancellation | Out of status, with fines and complications for returning |
| Loan due date | The date on your statement | A missed instalment, and later a mark on your credit file |
Everything else — restructuring, a settlement, a payment plan — can be negotiated in month three. The insurance claim cannot.
First, the insurance nobody remembers they have
The Involuntary Loss of Employment scheme is mandatory for most private-sector and federal employees, and it exists for exactly this week. Broadly, as the scheme publishes it:
- 60 percent of your basic salary, for up to three months per claim, within the scheme's monthly caps.
- You must have been subscribed for at least twelve consecutive months.
- It covers involuntary loss of employment — not resignation, and not dismissal for a disciplinary reason.
- Claims must be submitted within 30 days of the job ending.
Check the current terms and your own eligibility on the scheme's site before you rely on a figure; the caps and the process are the scheme's to change. But start the claim today rather than reading about it for a week: the deadline is the point. See ILOE for the short definition.
Three months of 60 percent will not cover your instalments. It is not meant to. What it does is buy you the month in which you can negotiate from a position that is not desperation.
Second, get your own numbers from HR — in writing
Ask for four things in one email, because you will need all of them for the bank conversation:
- The cancellation date. Your grace period runs from residency cancellation, not from your last day at the desk.
- The final-settlement breakdown: notice pay, unused leave, any commission owed.
- The gratuity figure. End-of-service benefit is 21 days' basic pay for each of the first five years and 30 days' basic pay for each year after that, after at least one year of service, capped at two years' total pay under the current labour law.
- The account it will be paid to. This matters more than it sounds — see below.
Third: write to the bank before the settlement lands
Here is the part that decides how the next six months go. Most UAE loan agreements include a clause allowing the bank to call in the balance when your employment ends, because the salary the loan was assessed against has stopped. And if your salary account is with the bank you owe — which it usually is, because that is how the loan was approved — your final settlement will land in an account that bank controls, with a loan agreement that may let it apply those funds against what is owed.
That is not a bank behaving badly. It is the salary-assignment clause and the agreement you signed doing what they say. What changes the outcome is whether there is an arrangement on the table before the money arrives.
So: one email, today, before HR pays anything.
Steal this: the email to send in week one
Change the brackets. Send it from the address on your account, to the bank's remediation or collections team — the bank directory has the verified address for six UAE banks.
Subject: Change in employment — account [number]
Dear [Bank] Financial Remediation / Collections team,
I am writing before my next due date on [date]. My employment ended on [date] through no fault of my own, and my income has stopped while I look for work.
I am not asking to write anything off, and I want to keep this account in order. I expect a final settlement of approximately AED [amount] to be paid into my account [number] with you on or around [date], and I have submitted a claim under the ILOE scheme.
Please confirm in writing: what relief or restructuring is available on this account while I am between jobs; whether any part of my final settlement will be applied to the account, and on what basis; and how any arrangement will be reported to the Al Etihad Credit Bureau.
I can be reached on [phone] and I will keep you updated in writing as my situation changes.
Kind regards, [Name] · [Emirates ID] · [phone]
Three things that email does. It puts you in front of the settlement rather than behind it. It asks the bank to state, in writing, what it intends to do with your money — which is a question banks answer more carefully in writing than on a call. And it creates a dated record of you engaging, which is what matters if the file is ever reviewed by anyone else.
Do the hisab: the three-month gap
A common situation, not a real person. Basic salary AED 12,000 with allowances taking the total to AED 16,000. A personal loan at AED 2,300 a month, a car loan at AED 1,600, cards counting AED 1,000, and rent of AED 4,500 due next quarter.
| Each month | |
|---|---|
| Income before | AED 16,000 |
| ILOE, at 60% of basic salary | AED 7,200 |
| Debt instalments | AED 4,900 |
| Left for everything else | AED 2,300 |
The gap is not a spending problem; it is AED 8,800 of income that stopped. Two levers exist, and both need the bank's agreement: pause the instalments for a period, or restructure them over a longer term so the monthly figure fits AED 7,200 instead of AED 16,000. The deferment guide has the request for the first; the timeline guide covers what happens at each stage if nothing is agreed.
The gratuity, if you have five years in, is roughly five times 21 days of basic pay — about AED 42,000 on AED 12,000 basic. That is three months of instalments and rent, or a settlement offer on the most expensive debt. What it is not is money to leave sitting in an account with an unarranged loan attached to it.
If the cancellation itself is what worries you — what happens to the account, and what the bank can do with the settlement in it — the visa-cancellation guide covers that week in detail.
If you are also deciding whether to leave
Job loss is when the "should I just go home?" question arrives, and it deserves a real answer rather than a fear. Two things are true at once: the debt follows you, and nothing at the airport stops you unless there is a court case in the system. The leaving-the-UAE guide covers what actually happens, and the travel-ban guide covers the only mechanism that can hold you here.
One thing to get right if you do stay: an absconding report is an employment matter your employer files, not a debt one. They are constantly confused, and confusing them leads people to make decisions about a debt based on a rumour about a visa.
The order, on one line
- ILOE claim — within 30 days, before anything else.
- HR: cancellation date, settlement breakdown, gratuity figure, paying account.
- The email to the bank, before the settlement is paid.
- Your own arithmetic: what you can sustain for three months.
- New job, or the decision to leave, with the numbers in front of you.
What not to do this week
- Do not take a new loan to cover the instalments. With no salary your debt burden ratio is unlendable anyway, and the applications sit on your credit file.
- Do not empty the account the settlement is paid into and hope nobody notices. It reads as avoidance and hardens the bank's position.
- Do not promise a payment you cannot make to end an awkward phone call. A kept small payment beats a broken large one every time.
- Do not let the ILOE deadline pass while you research it. Start the claim, then read.
Frequently asked questions
Does the bank have to give me a payment holiday?
No. Relief is at the bank's discretion. What you control is asking early, in writing, with a specific figure — and having a dated record of having done so.
What if I find a job in three weeks?
Then the arrangement you asked for may never be needed, and nothing has been lost by asking. An email that says "my employment ended and here is my plan" costs you nothing if the plan changes.
Can I claim ILOE if I resigned?
No. The scheme covers involuntary loss of employment. Resignation and dismissal for a disciplinary reason are outside it.
Should I use my gratuity to clear a debt?
It depends on which debt and what is left afterwards. Clearing the highest-rate balance saves the most; keeping three months of living costs buys the most time. What matters is that the decision is yours, taken before the money lands somewhere it can be applied without you.
